"(The graduation) is to celebrate the children, their families and all the hard work they've done," said Dr. Hans Kersten, medical director of the Grow Clinic.

Medical problems are responsible for 20 percent of the cases, according to Kersten.Other causes include learned behaviors such as being sick and not eating, a lack of access to appropriate nutrition or a need for family mealtime structure. For example, some kids will drink a gallon of juice a day or will constantly graze, the doctor explained.
If it is not treated, the condition could have long-term effects, including low IQ levels and less-than-average brain development.
"The main concern about FTT is that (children's) nutrition goes to brain growth," Kersten said."It impacts them over their entire life."
The clinic's staff, made up of a pediatrician, nurse practitioner, nutritionist, psychologist and social worker, treats about 170 patients each year.Their goal is to help children achieve normal weight gain, good nutrition and proper development.
"We work together," Kersten said.
