Bob Kerr of Kerr Farms has lost about an acre's worth of asparagus revenue thanks to Wednesday night's frost.
    ...
"It was the worst frost I've seen in the past five years," said Chatham-area farmer Bob Kerr, who grows 35 acres of asparagus and was planning to begin harvesting today.

He said there was widespread damage to his crop in Harwich.

"It means I won't have any of the spring tonic crop for sale until at least next Wednesday or Thursday," he said.

Kerr estimated his loss at upwards of $10,000.

"The worst part is we could easily get hammered again by cold weather," he said."This is only the beginning of May and I've experienced killing frost in my fields in mid-May."

Kerr said Wednesday morning's frost damage followed on the heels of cold Tuesday morning temperatures.

"There were no visible signs of damage in my crop Tuesday afternoon," he said.

Bob Kerr, past president of the Ontario Cattlemen's Association, is making the transition to organic for some of his crops. He grows both conventional and certified organic crops on his farm on the outskirts of Chatham. In addition, he has a 1,000-head beef feedlot that's not certified organic. But a selected group of animals are being fed on certified organic pasture.

He has about 550 acres of heavy clay loam land that was the first part of the farm to be certified. It's in a rotation of four years in pasture as a soil-building activity and three years in corn and soybeans. On some of the farm's sandy loam soil, he is growing certified organic processing tomatoes, asparagus and processing peas.

Will he eventually switch the whole farm to organic production?Kerr says that depends.
