"I can take a machine that's lived for 10 years at one [address] in my data center and give it that same address on Amazon," says Patrick Kerpan, CTO of cloud-computing software vendor CohesiveFT.

One of the reasons why there has been so much demand for VPCs, says Kerpan, is that enterprise IT teams are so comfortable with legacy computer networks. "The world of network thinking--the tools, the subnets, et cetera--if you're a networking team, you're using skills you've mapped to the network in order to solve problems," says Kerpan.

"You can tell customers--millions of IT people worldwide--you need to relearn everything [so that you can move your infrastructure to the cloud,] or you can make the migration as easy as humanly possible," says Kerpan.

BDNradio: Java One kick-off with Borland CTO Pat Kerpan - by John Kaster
    ...
Abstract: Listen to the replay of the live chat with Pat Kerpan and hear about a wide variety of technologies he's tracking
    ...
This is a log of the chat room during the live audio chat from June 28, 2005 on the Java One Borland kick-off with Pat Kerpan, Borland's Chief Technology Officer.
    ...
    - Pat:10th anniversary of Java and more ...

jkaster:jkaster: "What has Borland been doing for Java all these years?"- Pat lists a long line of products and productivity for Java
    ...
    - Pat: Borland lives in three markets. The point products market is one, where people are looking for specific technology tools (like UML tools). There is also integrated ALM, where customers buy sets of our technology and also integrate with competing products.CoreSDP is more of a platform of the overall Borland product set for whatever process the customer wants to follow.

jkaster:doychin: "Moving to Eclipse layer will there be migration of code centric technologies from JBuilder?"- Pat: We'll be providing more details as we go forward, but we intend to move JBuilder functionality over to Eclipse

jkaster:jkaster: "Do you think that techniques like Aspects for Java will become a mainstream part of Java?"- Pat: I actually thinks Aspects are fundamental.

jkaster:jkaster: "Does Java have an apparent advantage at Grid computing? What role will it play in Sun's vision of utility computing?"- Pat: BEA announced the JRocket JVM, so that's one interesting capability

jkaster:doychin: "What will be after SDP?Where you think the future of software development will be?"- Pat: SDP is a pretty big wedge.

Patrick Kerpan will be looking at how companies can secure their assets in the cloud
    ...
Patrick Kerpan, CTO of CohesiveFT, will be presenting at SYS-CON's 2nd International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo in New York City this coming March 30-April 1, 2009. Kerpan, who was the CTO of Borland before becoming one of CohesiveFT's founders in 2006, will be looking at how companies can secure their assets in the cloud.

"Access to scalable cloud resources will only increase in the years to come," Kerpan explains. "As we move closer to the reality of virtual private data centers, Enterprises must quickly get up to speed on not only how to deploy clusters of servers to the cloud, but also to protect them with a security perimeter they control," he continues.

Enterprise, in Kerpan's view, must understand the unique characteristics of cloud security and the challenges specific to compliance and governance. He says:

"According to leading industry analysts, security is one the gating factor preventing Enterprise cloud adoption of cloud solutions."

Kerpan's session will outline key considerations when evaluating virtual cloud solutions.

Speaker Bio: Patrick Kerpan is the CTO for CohesiveFT, the provider of the Elastic Server Platform. In this role, he is responsible for directing product and technology strategy. Kerpan brings more than 20 years of software development experience to the role of CTO and was one of CohesiveFT's founders in 2006. Previously he was the CTO of Borland Software Corp which he joined in 2000 through the acquisition of Bedouin, Inc., a company that he founded. Kerpan was also the vice president and general manager of the Developer Services Platform group at Borland, where he was instrumental in leading the Borland acquisition of StarBase in 2003.

"One thing we think they've done very well is to focus on foundation capabilities, not products, but foundation projects," said Patrick Kerpan, Borland's chief technology officer.Indeed, "This might be the end of the constant retooling we've gone through over the years for each evolutionary step of software engineering," Kerpan said.

"Eclipse creates an opportunity for vendors to stop competing on low-value, multiply implemented, ever-commoditized features and creates an opportunity for higher value solutions," said Borland's CTO Patrick Kerpan. "We see a renaissance of development capabilities coming."

Speaking at the recent EclipseCon conference in a session, titled "The Death of the IDE-Long Live the IDE," Kerpan and Borland's chief evangelist, David Intersimone, suggested that the Eclipse framework could serve as a kind of bridge spanning the various software engineering "epochs.
    ...
"Every time we've crossed one of these epochs," Kerpan added, "we've had to invest R&D dollars to keep up with features and weren't able to address the problems that were right in front of us."
    ...
"Once it is a platform game," Kerpan said, "it's time for Borland to add value to the platform, just like we do for WebSphere, Visual Studio, [and other products].
