    Charlie Kent Answers Questions
    ...
It was another jam-packed community forum as many residents turned out to voice concerns and hear feedback from Meridian Public Schools' superintendent Charlie Kent.

During the first hour, Kent answered submitted questions as well as impromptu questions from the audience. During the second hour, three breakout sessions were held addressing specific concerns including communication and school violence and discipline.

Many expressed confused over a few of Kent's statements during Sunday's summit at Fifth Street Baptist Church. Kent said "there were some elephants in the room," but he didn't elaborate on that statement.
    ...
Kent is the ring leader, bringing the elephant in the room to cloud the issues and divert the attention away from the BIG picture. He is ineffective at the job he was hired to do! We have never had forums or summits until we had THIS Supt. MPSD never had a problem with race until THIS Supt. made it an issue. We have been a school district that has been envied by many and imitated by few. Now, we are the laughing stock and the butt of jokes across the State. I bet even those Harvard folks had a chuckle at our expense when Charlie Kent unfolded his tent. Let's herd the elephants out of town, and bring back our Wildcat pride for the entire district. "Ain't no black or white when we ALL stand for BLUE!"

Posted by: Sick at Heart on Jul 15, 2009 at 02:38 PM I have attended every forum, including the one at Fifth Street Baptist Church, and I am sick at heart after last night's forum. Mr. Kent was very clever in using a diversionary tactic to get the focus off the problems that he has brought to MPSD. Race is NOT the problem. Teachers are not the ones speaking disrespectfully - some students talk to the teachers in a way that would appall the community. They have learned that they can do this (as well as ignore school rules) because their parent can go to Central Office and any consequences to their actions will be taken away. This will be done without conferring with ANYONE from the school - he doesn't even try to hear the other side. Mr. Kent brought up the number of white teachers; does he just want to run us away? It's working, Mr. Kent! The elephant in the room is Mr. Kent's racism and refusal to change what really needs to be changed.

Posted by: citizen1 on Jul 15, 2009 at 01:45 PM Please explain how Mr.Kent is doing a "wonderful job".
    ...
I thought that the EMBDC wanted to a strong leadership role in education??? (2) Why is everyone quick to demonize Charlie Kent when the district (and this entire region) has been so complacent and lax when it comes to education.
    ...
You are doing a wonderful job Mr. Kent.
    ...
If Mr. Kent would just stop creating more problems ever time he opens his mouth and demeans the teachers, we could move forward! He DOESN'T know his employees. Why does he badger us? He is not truly looking to hear from the teachers. Not once did the faculty council meet last school year. I do not believe that he will be at the schools either. He claims to have the children's interest at heart; he failed to appear at several events last school term. Hopefully, he will change!!!!

But Meridian superintendent Charlie Kent says otherwise.

"The principal has been cleared of those allegations at the high school," said Kent.

When asked as of what date, Kent said, "I don't know the exact date, but it was early last week.
    ...
State education officials sent a letter to Kent and it states, in addition to the district being placed on advised status for the 08-09 school year, Meridian High School's annual performance will be labeled as a "school in violation of test security."

"The plan has been submitted and accepted by MDE. We have done everything that MDE has asked us to do," Kent said.
    ...
At the second forum, Kent was asked what he had done for MPSD this year. After much verbage, he could not come up with anything, except accomplishments by STUDENTS. He claimed that he was just getting the lay of the land this year. Not exactly true - what about alienating teachers district-wide or the demolition of discipline?
    ...
In view of interviews with MS Dept. of Education officials (reported in detail in the Hattiesburg American and the Clarion Ledger - check them out online), the district's attempts to make it seem as if nothing illegal has transpired (according to V. Hood) and nothing has basically changed, other than a piece of paper in a folder (according to Kent)are frighteningly bizarre.
    ...
The two teachers who resigned (white) 3 teachers who turned in the cheating (white) the 2 who cheated (black) Can we all get along Kent no not when you have Hood sitting at your right side throwing it in our faces.

During a special meeting Wednesday, the district's board of trustees unanimously approved a three-year contract with Charlie T. Kent Jr. as superintendent of the Meridian Public School District.
    ...
"One of our main goals to start with is to maintain what's already there; we have a very good district and we want to move it from good to great," said Kent, who will assume his superintendent duties on July 1."Also, we want to maintain the notion that failure is not an option."

A native of Mississippi, Kent currently serves as superintendent of the Country Club Hills School District - a suburb of south Chicago.Prior to that, he served as assistant superintendent of the Human Resources Division of the Indianapolis Public Schools. He has twice served as interim superintendent of the Decatur (Illinois) Public School District, as well as serving as that district's director of Human Services.

As superintendent of the Country Club Hills School District, Kent has focused on bolstering students' academic success.Since 2001, when he joined the district, student achievement has increased. In the 2001-02 school year, only 40 percent of the district's students met or exceeded state learning goals, as measured by the Illinois Standards Achievement Test.By 2006-07, approximately 61 percent of students were doing so.

"The board chose Charlie for a number of reasons: he's a native Mississippian, he knows the educational issues that face our community and he also understands the opportunities that we have," Wile said.
    ...
As the district moves into a new era, Kent said it is vital that students have the teachers and administrators they need, as well as the professional development to continue to move forward.
    ...
"Partner with me and the rest of the district, and let's do what's right and what's best for our children," Kent said.

Just before the halls were full of students, Meridian's new school Superintendent, Charles Kent, set down with Newscenter Eleven's John Johnson to discuss his goals for the district.

"We are also inviting parents to come in to the system. We want parents back in the schools.Once upon a time, we would say,"send us your children and we will take care of them."We didn't have parental involvement. We definitely need that involvement these days," said Kent.

Meridian Public School District Superintendent Charles Kent was questioned Tuesday night at a community forum about a previous statement he had made, opening up discussion about what some said was a necessary yet sensitive topic: race.

"There's an elephant in the room from last Sunday - What does that mean? I would like to know what the elephant is," asked Cynthia Griffin Tuesday night at a third community forum on education at Wesley House Community Center. Griffin also was an attendee of the community-invited Educational Forum this past Sunday at Fifth Street Baptist Church.

Kent led the summit this past weekend aimed towards the community and its input. Paramount and complex issues were addressed. Some said Kent focused on an ethical and civil approach in his discussion without moving from the reality of the situation.

Tuesday was the first meeting since the Sunday summit at the church, and Kent's previous "there's an elephant in the room" statement trickled over for questioning.

"The elephant in the room that we don't talk about is race," Kent said Tuesday, responding to Griffin's question.

The purpose of this meeting was the discussion of violence and discipline. Kent, concerned citizens, and principals Jonas Crenshaw of Magnolia Middle School, Martha Walker of Carver, and Kim Kendrick of Northwest were in attendance.
    ...
"We must sit together and discuss some of the cultural issues and some of the things that have been taking place in this community over the years," Kent said.
    ...
Kent said the most important element in all of this is simple: our children.
