In his book, "And I Was There," Admiral Layton, at that time fleet intelligence officer, states on page 274 that when sent to the USS California for Admiral Pye's opinion on the probability of the Japanese attacking the Philipppines (Pye was Commander of the Fleet Battle Force) , Pye replied "Oh, no.

Above remarks were made o Dec. 6.Admiral Pye was not promoted beyond his rank of Vice-Admiral.However he was made Acting Commander of the Pacific Fleet on Dec. 17 until Admiral Nimitz's arrival.He was later made head of the Naval War College until his retirement in1944.
