Allan Kennedy became an apprentice machinist in 1961 with George Swift & Sons Ltd, an old established family firm with a workforce of several hundred producing heavy duty metal turning lathes from five Halifax factories.

Throughout this period of rapid development, lasting almost thirty years, Allan worked as the Applications Engineer, becoming involved in all aspects of the industry from new machine concepts through to design, testing and finally the training of the personnel who were to program and operate the new machines.
He handled the on site commissioning of almost all of the company's products at home and abroad gaining vast experience, not only with CNC machine tools but also with the products to which they were applied.These ranged from the drilling of tiny diesel fuel injector nozzles to the turning of turbine rotors for huge power stations.From the machining of camshaft bearings for the latest Jaguar V8 engine to an experimental friction stir welding machine for the next generation Airbus.
Allan joined the University as Senior Applications Engineer to the CPT in 2002, with the aim of extending its commercial activities in the field with particular emphasis on machine tool services such as laser calibration, part-programming and consultation on all aspects of CNC machining.
