According to Diane Kelly-Riley, director of Writing Assessment, the WSU Writing Portfolio Seventh Findings (2005-07) report is "by far the most positive report ever."

"Students are completing their junior Writing Portfolios earlier in their academic careers, they are submitting writing examples from a wider range of disciplines and more students campus wide are showing they are ready to write proficiently in their majors," said Kelly-Riley.
    ...
The Writing Portfolio began in 1993 as a diagnostic tool to measure students' preparedness to write in their major courses and to provide colleges and administration with information about their students' writing skills, said Kelly-Riley.

"The program impressed the committee in a number of ways, especially its remarkably successful assessment program, its remarkable inclusiveness, and its ability to sustain its excellence in the face of change," wrote CCCC Chairman Charles Bazerman in his notification letter to WSU Writing Program co-directors Diane Kelly-Riley and Lisa Johnson-Shull.

The activities have been organized by members of the administrative internship that is part of the writing program course, said Diane Kelly-Riley, co-director of the Writing Program.

She said the Writing Program is celebrating the National Day on Writing to help students gain understanding of the importance of writing. Many students are unaware of the variety of writing styles that they include into their lives daily, she said.

"We want to emphasize the integral role writing plays in all of our lives, and the ways in which our modes of writing are changing," Kelly-Riley said. "The National Day on Writing at WSU will emphasize the significant amount of writing that students do. WSU is very successful with incorporating writing skills into courses throughout the undergraduate studies, she said. WSU allows students many opportunities to gain knowledge of writing through many programs such as the Junior Writing Portfolio, the Writing Placement Exam and General Education courses.

The process in instate this first National Day on Writing was started by the National Council of the Teachers of English. The Senate passed this decision to support the role of writing in everyday life, Kelly-Riley said.

She said the National Council of the Teachers of English wanted to pass this because they wanted to show that young people are leading the way in developing new forms of communicating. They do this by using different forms of digital media to successfully communicate, working to build a global community, she said.

A primary emphasis of WSU's writing program is engaging students across all areas of academic discipline, Writing Program Co-director Diane Kelly-Riley said.
    ...
WSU's writing program started in the 1980s when the school began to hear complaints from a number of major employers across the state that its graduates were poor writers, Kelly-Riley said. Some Washington state schools chose to respond by implementing writing programs, and WSU was one of them, she said.

Diane Kelly-Riley, director of the writing assessment program, said there is difficulty for some of the 60 percent of students who transfer into WSU with credit.

She said New Student Programs recently made its programs mandatory for transfer students.

"They have to come to some kind of orientation session," she said. "I think that will go a long way to increase the knowledge transfer students have." Kelly-Riley said transfer students who turn in the writing portfolio often perform better on the requirement than those who begin college at WSU.

This past semester, about 170 students earned Pass with Distinction ratings," said Diane Kelly-Riley, the director of the Writing Assessment Program that oversees the writing portfolio for college juniors."Of those, 45 were nominated for the top awards, and only 6 were chosen as the winners."

Each recipient was recognized with a Writing Portfolio Award sponsored by the Harold and Jeanne Rounds Olsen Writing Across the Curriculum endowment fund. The awards included a $100 scholarship and an invitation for a job in the Writing Center as a student tutor to peers.

"The Rounds Olsen awards are significant because these students represent the top third of the top one percent of writers at WSU," said Kelly-Riley.

The writing portfolio consists of three papers chosen to illustrate the student's best work, along with an impromptu timed writing exam.A group of about 50 experienced faculty graders evaluate each portfolio on how well it is focused, organized, supported, and proofread, said Kelly-Riley.The best Writing Portfolio Award winners are selected by a committee of five faculty raters.
