Kathleen Keane, Schnader director of legal administration, said the idea was hatched about a years and a half ago by the firm's associates committee. The retreat included a two-hour client development session with Chuck Polin, president of Training Resource Group, a consulting firm that Schnader uses, Keane said the firm's associates have been asking for more help in honing their client development (that is, sales and marketing) skills even though they aren't expected to be rainmakers this early in their careers.

"They were concerned that as they grew through the ranks that they would not have the tools to begin client development," Keane said.

Diana Donaldson, Schnader managing partner, and Kathleen Keane, director of legal administration, noted that many firm associates expressed an interest in client and business development skills and asked for help in honing those abilities as part of the retreat.
