Union spokesperson George Kean says most employees would have taken their vacation during this time anyway, and he says the union was aware of the effects the slumping global economy could bring to the industry. Kean says they are working with IOC, and adds they are relieved no layoffs are planned. He says they don't want any layoffs, including management. He says they will still be operating the mine and preparing for when things do get better. The company is now reviewing their plans, as a major expansion has been in the works. Some of the planned projects will still be going ahead, like the conveyer system and the double decker system going into the pellet plant. He says the new mill which just came in has been set aside until the situation improves.

President of the Steelworkers Local 5795 in Labrador City - George Kean, says workers are dealing with a lot of uncertainty. Rio Tinto is set to lay off 14 thousand workers world-wide, but haven't announced where. Labrador West workers haven't been subjected to a lay off announcement yet, but the economy could take a while to turn around. Kean says his union plans to join other troubled unions across Canada, to prepare for rough times. He says steel workers are starting a campaign to get them a better EI package. They would now only receive just over 14 thousand when the poverty line is 24 thousand. That's something he calls an insult when you've been paying into benefits for years. Kean says they'd like to increase EI benefits to 75% - about 15% more than where they are now.
