    "The rationale for this is that the markets are slow, but also we've got a fair stockpile of pellets and we want to have a higher inventory of concentrate, hoping that if the market turns around in the near future, we've got both pellets and concentrate to offer customers for sale," said George Kean, president of union local 5795.

    There will be no layoffs as a result of the latest shutdowns, Kean said. Workers will be distributed among other areas of the project beginning in January.

    This is the first time the operation has been down to half production without any layoffs, Kean said.

    "As president, I'm quite pleased the IOC, at this stage, is doing everything possible to alleviate the hardship on the employees," he said.

    The President of Steelworkers Local 5795 in Labrador City, George Kean indicates action is needed on many fronts. He says people have lost faith in the economy and government. He says they need government to help the unemployed through the most serious economic situation in years. Kean says there are numerous industries and workers impacted. He says the recession is effecting every sector of unionized and non-unionized people. Kean says the union has been sending leaflets to all of their members across the country and other unions.     Striking workers at the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Labrador City have been on the picket lines for 33 days now and the president of Steelworkers' Union in the area, George Kean, says there is still no sign of a resolution.Kean told VOCM Open Line with Randy Simms the onus is on IOC to return to the table.

    Steelworkers President George Kean says they have been in close contact with the company, and there are no indications the shutdown will last longer than 5 weeks. Kean says of the 1150 members. About 1050 will be on vacation, and the rest will remain on for fire duty and work. He says they are optimistic this will be the last shutdown for the year.
