"It's not just about the Orpheus myth, but about his memory of the ordeal, remembering how he felt," said Alan Kay, clarinetist and program coordinator with the orchestra.

Orpheus, the son of Apollo and the muse Calliope, made such beautiful music it moved even stones and plants. After his beloved wife Eurydice died, grieving Orpheus traveled to the underworld to reclaim her.He succeeded, the condition being he wouldn't look back at her as she followed him back to life. But Orpheus could not resist, lost his wife again, and never got over the trauma.

Each piece in Tuesday's program will have been thoroughly digested and rehearsed by the musicians, the players studying scores and discussing musical approach.Everyone at any point in the process is encouraged to voice ideas.

"That's what Orpheus is about: discussing things quite a bit until we reach consensus. There's an empowerment that comes with being in Orpheus," said Kay.
