According to American Textile Company's senior product manager, Jennifer Katz
, ATC's new line of mattress and pillow protectors, which will be marketed as Aller-Ease with DuPont(TM) Hybrid Membrane Technology (HMT), will offer superior protection from pollen, dust mites, mold and fungal spores, and both dog and cat dander, while maintaining the soft, comfortable, breathable feel of cotton.
"Many people do not realize pollen, pet dander, mold, or the tens of thousands of dust mites that multiply in unprotected mattresses or pillows may be the cause of their sneezing, wheezing, and uncomfortable post nasal drip that interrupts their sleep," Katz said. "For the 50 million Americans who are allergic to such household environmental allergens, as well as those who are ready to upgrade their bedding protectors to enjoy greater comfort, Aller-Ease with DuPont(TM) Hybrid Membrane Technology (HMT) is really good news."
According to Katz, in order for mattress and pillow protectors to be marketed as certified allergen barriers, they have to block out allergens at the 10 micron level -- a size that is roughly one half the width of a human hair. She said mattress and pillow protectors made with Aller-Ease from DuPont(TM) HMT filter 95 percent of all common household allergens at the ONE micron level, a fabric pore size that is approximately 1/50th the width of a human hair, and a performance and comfort level that is unprecedented in a cotton, breathable fabric.
"Pillow, mattress and box spring protectors made from vinyl film and laminated technology provide a high level of allergen protection, but the materials are noisy or can trap body heat and moisture next to the skin, so are less comfortable to sleep on," Katz said. "Aller-Ease with DuPont(TM) HMT protectors represent next-generation technology. They are made of a 100 percent cotton twill top layer, the innovative DuPont(TM) HMT filtration middle layer, and a protective back fabric, a combo that rivals vinyl as an effective allergen particle barrier, while still maintaining the breathability and comfort of cotton at the one micron level. This new comfort level is the best of both worlds, and can enhance uninterrupted sleep," Katz explained. -
