With his loving family at his side, Chester resident Charles Joseph Karch peacefully passed from this life to join his daughter in their eternal home with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 28, 2007, at the long-term care unit of Seneca Health Care District in Chester.

Born 87 years ago in Philadelphia, Pa., to Pennsylvania natives Paul and Florence (Shermar) Karch on April 27, 1920, Charles moved with his family at the age of 9 to southern California.

Charles graduated from Bell High School where he was class president and competed in baseball and basketball as a member of the class of 1936.Following graduation Charles went to work for the Los Angeles Times before enlisting as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.Upon his honorable discharge and return home, Charles went back to work for the Times and rose to the position of Plant Manager and Production Manager of the Orange County Plant of the Los Angeles Times.He retired after 42 years of loyal and dedicated service.On June 24, 1945, he married his high school sweetheart, Helen Warwick, in a ceremony celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Maywood.To this holy union six daughters were born.Following his and his wife's retirement, they moved to the northeastern California community of Lake Almanor, spending summers at Lassen View Resort and wintering in Kelseyville.Charles was a devout member of the Roman Catholic faith and attended Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Westwood.While residing in Southern California and as a member of the Diocese of Los Angeles, he sang as a member of St. Paul of the Cross parish choir.Besides his family, Charles' passion in life was baseball.He played throughout his youth, in the military and continued to play semi-professional ball as an adult.He shared his abilities by coaching as a member of the Golden State Junior Baseball Association.Charles also served on the board of directors.Charles also enjoyed the challenge of a good game of golf, fishing and he was an avid reader.In passing, Charles leaves his loving wife of 62 years, Helen of Chester; daughters Cecilia Karch of Barbados, West Indies, Paula Karch Bethard of Durham, Louise Karch Raya of Newport Beach, Diane Karch Dowden of Lake Almanor and Margaret Karch Hooten of Placerville; five precious grandchildren along with six step-grandchildren.
