Jeffrey D. Karceski is a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Barnes & Thornburg LLP.He concentrates his practice on patent prosecution, counseling, and opinion work.Mr. Karceski has prosecuted hundreds of patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), is familiar with international patent practice, and has prosecuted numerous patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty.Mr. Karceski assists clients to obtain worldwide patent protection for their products.He also helps clients manage their patent portfolios.
Mr. Karceski advises clients on virtually every aspect of patent law, including: patent drafting, prosecution before the United States Patent Office and foreign patent offices, validity studies, infringement studies, product clearances, and patent clearances, among others.Mr. Karceski understands why businesses are motivated to obtain patent protection and the value of that protection in the marketplace.He guides clients in their decision-making with respect to their patent portfolios worldwide.
Mr. Karceski has assisted clients to procure patents in a wide variety of subject areas including: electronics, circuits, semiconductor processing, photolithography, materials science, mechanical devices, optics, data processing, communications, software, vehicles, vehicle-related parts and accessories, internal combustion engines, locomotive trains, and aircraft.Mr. Karceski also has prosecuted several hundred design patent applications and is very familiar with the design patent process and the nuances associated with that practice.
While not a primary focus of his current practice, Mr. Karceski has assisted in patent litigations, litigations involving trade dress allegations, and 337 investigations before the International Trade Commission.Mr. Karceski also has been involved in several patent reexaminations and patent interferences.
In addition, Mr. Karceski is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University.Since 1994, he has been teaching a paralegal studies course in intellectual property as a part of the Paralegal Studies Program.
Mr. Karceski received a J.D. from the George Washington University Law Center and a B.S. in nuclear engineering (with a minor in mechanical engineering) from the University of Maryland, College Park.He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and is registered to practice before the USPTO.
