Leading our program is a nationally renowned trauma expert, Joseph Karam, MD, FACS, Medical Director of Trauma Services and Surgical Critical Care. Dr. Karam previously served five years as medical director of the Level I trauma center at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia.

When Joseph Karam, M.D., was growing up in West Side, his keen interest in animals led his father to think he would be a veterinarian.

He wasn't too far off.

Dr. Karam was recently appointed the new trauma center director at the Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif.

The son of Joseph Karam Sr. and the late Carol Krinock Karam, Dr. Karam has always kept his local ties, his father said. "He carries a lot of Scranton with him," Mr. Karam said.

The 47-year-old Dr. Karam is a graduate of Scranton Preparatory School and the University of Scranton. He previously held a similar trauma care position at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia.

"It is certainly an integral part of any trauma surgeon's character to love a challenge," Dr. Karam told his new hospital's monthly bulletin.

Though his son had to move three time zones away, Mr. Karam said the new job is a proud accomplishment.

"They've been after him for a while to go out there," he said.

Joseph Karam, MD, Medical Director, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care

Dr. Karam recently joined Kaiser Permanente from Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he has served as Medical Director, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Services, for the hospital's Level I Trauma Center since 2004. He received his bachelor's degree from The University of Scranton and medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He completed general surgery residencies in Pennsylvania at Hahnemann University Hospital, Polyclinic Medical Center, and Geisinger Medical Center. He completed fellowships in trauma and critical care at Allegheny University Hospital in Philadelphia, and in gastrointestinal surgery research at Hahnemann University.
