For Mike Kapsa, it's all about family: his family at home and his family at Southwest Airlines. As Manager of Maintenance Contracts, Mike Kapsa gets to do some unusual things for the members of his Southwest family.Mike is the first one who's called when the Marketing or Public Relations departments want to do something wild and wacky with an airplane, like the Texas/OU Plane Pull, the Spirit of Hope tour, or creating a special plane for H-E-B's 100th Anniversary.
"Definitely the most unusual thing I've been asked to help with is wrapping an entire airplane in Christmas lights for the Chicago plane lighting event last December," Mike says."The interaction with various work groups is what I like most about my job."
In addition to promotional events, Mike acts as point person for all maintenance contracts and manages Southwest's maintenance vendors. For 22 years, Mike has been a part of the Maintenance Department at Southwest Airlines, starting as a Mechanic, moving to Supervisor, Inspector, Controller, and Engineer before being promoted to Manager.
"Southwest gives me the opportunity to work as part of a team with all the wonderful Employees throughout Southwest Airlines," Mike says."We all have the same goal, which is to keep Southwest a safe and profitable airline."
When not working hard alongside his Southwest family members, Mike spends his time with his wife, Brenda, and their three daughters and two sons. You can often find Mike umpiring high school baseball, helping his oldest daughter barrel race, volunteering for the local Ronald McDonald House, or providing meals to needy families during the holidays. If he can find a little quiet time, Mike might do a little fishing and watch auto racing, but is often too busy with other things.
"I stay busy doing 'honey-dos' for my lovely wife and being Super Dad to my wonderful children," he says."I stay motivated by the ability to help others, by my family, and by my faith."
By focusing on what's important to him, Mike is the ultimate family man.
