Terry Kalet, education director at Temple B'nai Torah since 1993, has signed on to lead the religion school at Congregation Beth Shalom. For Kalet, it's a change from a 750-child school to the 180 children currently registered at Beth Shalom.
"One of the surprises is that it's not very different," said Kalet, after her first week on the job."But it is really invigorating and there are a lot of new things as well. It's much more intimate and I have a chance to be much more involved in the B'nai Mitzvah program and curriculum development."
Kalet, who lives in Kirkland, has two bachelor of arts degrees, one in social work and the other in fine arts. She also has earned a master's degree in education. She left a Reform congregation in a suburban setting to lead the education department at a Conservative congregation in a more urban setting. She is making an adjustment to new rituals and worship style as well as a different atmosphere.
"I feel really comfortable with their level of observance and practice," said Kalet, wearing a burgundy and gold-bordered yarmulke that matched her working attire."Also, I grew up in the Ravenna district. It feels like coming home and the commute is much better."
Kalet says she will spend much of her time watching, learning and making recommendations for the next year. Her approach is not too different from the previous director and she feels there are many positive foundations to build on.
"I'm very impressed with the teens that come out of here," said Kalet.
