Professor Kakkar joined Barts and The London in July 2004 and leads Professor Kakkar (HEFCE-funded) leads the only multidisciplinary research programme in the area of cancer-associated thrombosis in the UK.Venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) remains the commonest avoidable cause of hospital death in the UK, and is estimated to affect the natural history of up to 20% of cancer patients with fatal pulmonary embolism - the second commonest cause of death in cancer patients.Professor Kakkar, who is also Director of the Thrombosis Research Institute in London, is internationally recognised in this area, having led the landmark studies of the use of low molecular weight heparin in prevention and treatment of cancer-associated thrombosis (FAMOUS, CLOT in Cancer, MC-4).These not only appeared in high-profile journals but formed the basis of international practice guidelines (American College of Chest Physicians and ASCO).He is now principal investigator and steering group member for large clinical trials of novel agents targeting factors Xa and IIa in cancer populations for both thrombosis prevention and cancer survival studies.
