The ACD (www.acd4.org) is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and informing design professionals, business leaders, and the general public about emerging ideas, research, and technology affecting design today.
   
   HotBot, one of the Web's top-rated search sites, and Wired News, a leading technology news service, were selected by ACD's panel of design experts based on their optimal use of technology, quality of interactivity, speed of download, strength of concept, and inventive vision with this new communications medium. ACD's judging panel of design industry notables included Elizabeth Kairys, art director for Salon Magazine, S. Joy Mountford of Interval Research Corporation, and CD-ROM and Web site design pioneer, Peter Girardi.

   Elizabeth Kairys a freelance graphic designer who lives in San Francisco, very close to 826 Valencia. She is the former Design Director of Salon.com and has worked as an art director and designer for McSweeney's since 1998. Elizabeth is also a painter, and has had a couple of exhibits in both San Francisco and New York.

   Elizabeth Kairys was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She has a degree in film from Northwestern University and now works as a freelance graphic designer in San Francisco. Her paintings have recently shown in the Panorama Project - a group show in Williamsburg in which 50 artists created a continuous landscape, and in a solo exhibit at the Carmichael Gallery in San Francisco in 1997.
   
   For her design work, Elizabeth was recently recognized in the Cooper-Hewitt Design Triennial, The Pasadena Museum Design Biennial, AIGA and Print magazine.
