   During the last General Election three candidates vied for the seat which was won by the late David Munene Kairu of the Democratic Party (DP) of Kenya, who died in 1988. Even in his death Kairu's legacy is still much alive and the residents remember him with a lot of nostalgia especially for his generosity.

   Mrs Kairu says the most pressing issues in Kieni include lack of water and the resultant decline in agriculture, especially dairy farming which is the main economic activity. She says her mission is to organise and complete the stalled water projects which were started by her late husband and which she says have been neglected. Mrs Kairu says her objective is to alleviate poverty by initiating self-help groups in such areas like bee keeping, silk farming, horticulture and their marketing. She was born 48 years ago in Kieni and went to Chinga Girls High School where she did her O-Levels in 1973. She later joined the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) where she attained a diploma in business administration. Kairu is a businesswoman and is running her late husband's business empire that includes the famous White Rhino Hotel in Nyeri town.

   Born 47 years ago Warugongo is running for the Kieni parliamentary seat for the first time and will be seeking the DP/Narc ticket.
