ASIC Native Title sub-committee Chair, Professor George Kailis, said the working group culminated long efforts to establish sound commercial working relationships.

"There is much that existing commercial fishers - indigenous and non-indigenous - can do to support new entrants through peer advice, training and encouragement.

"Those indigenous Australians already engaged in commercial fishing are a testament to the economic and lifestyle benefits of choosing fishing as a career path," Professor Kailis said.

Professor Kailis said the industry recognises the cultural importance offishing for coastal Indigenous communities and the potential for commercial fishing to provide economic opportunities for Indigenouscommunities.

"The industry wants to play its part in negotiating these claims because we realise that negotiation rather than litigation will result in speedier and better outcomes for our members and Indigenous claimants,"Professor Kailis said.

"In the long term we are looking at resolutions which will benefit Indigenous communities, commercial fishers and the Australian economy,"Professor Kailis said.
