A Northup staffer recognized the student, Robert Kahne, from a picture posted on a website supporting Yarmuth. Then, by looking at Kahne's MySpace.com profile, the Northup campaign found his blog, in which he wrote that he hated Republicans and that they all should be killed.Kahne later said the comments were written in jest.

As in Yarmuth's case, MySpace, Facebook.com and other social networking sites are posing increasing risks for politicians. The Washington gossip blog Wonkette has posted several snapshots of embarrassing or incriminating information or pictures on the profiles of politicians' children.

Neely complained that the actions by Robert Kahne, a Yarmuth campaign volunteer and University of Kentucky freshman, amounted to a "Nixonian dirty trick."
    ...
His letter went on to say that the move was particularly disturbing because Kahne had posted inflammatory comments about Republicans on his personal Web log on the popular Myspace.com site.

Kahne did not return a request for comment.

The Yarmuth campaign disavowed any knowledge of Kahne's actions and has severed all ties with Kahne, said Dan Borsch, Yarmuth's manager.
    ...
Among comments responding to that, Kahne later wrote that the remarks were meant to be a joke.
    ...
Borsch said Kahne, who is incoming vice president of the University of Kentucky College Democrats, joined as a volunteer.
    ...
Yarmuth paid Kahne $100 around the May 16 primary race because "we needed more hands on deck, and we asked him to be here more."
    ...
Borsch said Kahne, 19, was among dozens of supporters who worked out of the campaign office but "had no agreed-upon relationship."

The letter says Robert Kahne, a 19-year-old University of Kentucky student who is identified in several places on the Internet as vice president of the school's College Democrats, used the name "Bobby Conn" along with a fake phone number and address. The letter claims Kahne "began taking materials off of our front desk."

It also makes note of an online journal entry from early May in which Kahne writes about killing Republicans. In his next entry, dated two days later, he apologizes for the comments and says he didn't mean them.

Yarmuth's campaign manager, Dan Borsch, said Kahne was a volunteer and not an employee of the campaign, as the letter contends, though he was once paid $100 "just to be around more frequently."Yarmuth's campaign denied any knowledge of Kahne's actions and said he will no longer be involved with the campaign.
    ...
Borsch declined to address specifics of the letter or to provide contact information for Kahne.
    ...
Kahne did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment by press time.

On the LiveJournal website the letter refers to, Kahne writes, "I HATE REPUBLICANS. yes. hate. i hate them. all of them. i wish we could have a liberal inquisition and do like the spanish, where we would go up to people and say 'Are you a Republican?' and then if they said yes, we would kill them. with swords of course, guns would be illegal."
