A burning desire to teach fire safety - [Cached Version]
Published on: 8/23/2003    Last Visited: 8/24/2003

"We always have a very good response," said Pendleton Fire Chief Kurt Kahl."The kids like it for the education it gives them. And the kids bring their parents.Questions get answered about fire and the way we fight it."

The open house is Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the fire station, 100 S. Broadway."We'll be cooking burgers and things like that," said Kahl.
    ...
As the children exit the smoke trailer, they will receive tickets for a drawing for two bicycles at the end of the open house, Kahl said.

Other prizes will benefit the whole family as one carbon monoxide detector and one smoke detector will be given away during the afternoon.

Kahl explained that the open house always is held the weekend before Labor Day, which also corresponds with the annual firefighters' drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.Firefighters will be at the corner of Broadway and State Street asking people to "fill the boot" that weekend, including the time of the open house, Kahl noted.
    ...
"We cover all of Fall Creek Township and contract to cover two-thirds of Green Township," Kahl explained.Companies from Ingalls, Lapel and Fortville cover the remaining portions of Green Township."It may confuse people who wonder who covers what, but we know exactly what we cover," he said.

With the increase in residential development in Green Township, plans are in the works for a new fire station. It will be constructed by the township, Kahl explained, and everything is still on the drawing board.

The fire department also spearheaded the project to obtain defibrillators, which have been put in service in four police cars as well as in the schools, Kahl said.

Trench collapses on construction workers - [Cached Version]
Published on: 6/23/2002    Last Visited: 6/23/2002

Late Friday, Pendleton Fire Chief Kurt Kahl told The Herald Bulletin that House was being kept overnight at Methodist Hospital for observation but no injuries could be found.
    ...
House, Kahl said, is due to be released today.
    ...
Kahl said he did not think the trench was deep enough to require the use of trench boxes -- metal devices that help secure the sides of a ditch while workers are inside.

As workers lined the sides of the trench with wood from the Pendleton True Value Hardware store Kahl owns, others from the community turned out to help any way they could.

"People are volunteering everything from back hoes to pay loaders to food," Kahl said.

Rescue teams from Fishers and Pike Township in Indianapolis with expertise in trench rescues were called in to help. They worked quickly but deliberately trying to make sure the trench was secure before trying to remove more dirt.
