   Trinity teacher John Kahl '69 was one of 13 members of the St. Matthews community honored for contributions to the betterment of the area during the St. Matthews Community Pride Breakfast at 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at The Olmstead.Honorees, who received a special Community Pride service award, were selected by civic clubs and other organizations engaged primarily in community service.John has taught and coached at Trinity for 32 years.During that time he has primarily taught English.He won the Tom Sheeran Teacher of the Year Award (voted on by Trinity students) in 1994 and 2000, and he received the 1999 Father Joseph McGee Award for Outstanding Catholic Educator from the Archdiocese of Louisville.
   
   As a Trinity coach, he helped lead the cross country Shamrocks to six state championships.He was an assistant golf coach for the 1978 state championship team and head coach for state title teams in 1979, '87 and '90.He has also served as captain of Trinity's alumni Shillelagh Cup team since its inception in 2000.
   
   John is the past secretary for the board of directors of the Don Fightmaster Golf Tournament for Exceptional Children; a past member of the Foster Brooks Pro-Celebrity Golf Tournament committee; a past member of the Trinity School and Alumni boards; a founding member of the Trinity Hall of Fame committee; and a past member of the Trinity Faculty Senate and its past president.
   
   John's love of service to others is often noticed by those who know and meet him.He coordinates the annual Trinity Father-Son Golf Tournament and is the founder of the annual Shooting for the Stars Basketball Camp for people with special needs.The camp brings together the basketball teams and coaches of Trinity, St. X and Sacred Heart, who work in the spirit of cooperation to teach basketball skills to the people of St. Mary's Center.
   
   John serves as Trinity's hospital chaplain, providing a presence for those in the Trinity community who are in need.
   
   John created Trinity's Salute to Alumni in Uniform.This display at Trinity allows students to see more than 200 men who came before them and now serve others and their country.
   
   In 1999, John's classmates awarded him the Bruce Borntraeger Memorial Spirit Award, which is given to the Trinity Class of 1969 alumnus who best exemplifies the spirit of service to Trinity.In 2003, John was honored by the Trinity Alumni Association as the year's Honor Alumnus.
   
   John is a member of St. Margaret Mary Parish where he is a Eucharistic minister.
