"We were here four or five times in the past," said Ric Jurgens, chairman and chief executive officer of Hy-Vee.Each previous attempt didn't work out for various reasons.

"This one finally fell into place for us," he said Friday during a sneak preview of the store.

Hy-Vee spent $18 million on land, building and equipment for its Topeka store, which has 75,100 square feet.

"We're awfully proud to introduce the new Hy-Vee store as the most beautiful Hy-Vee store in seven states," Jurgens said.
    ...
Jurgens said Hy-Vee, based in West Des Moines, Iowa, is 79 years old and employee-owned.Employees have an opportunity to buy stock in the company through their 401(k) after 1,000 hours of service.

Jurgens said sales have climbed about 9 percent a year to $6 billion expected this year.Same store sales have been climbing 7.5 percent annually, which is healthy in the retail sector.

Hy-Vee has seen strong growth in its pharmacy and organic and natural foods business.Sales of organic and natural foods have grown 20 percent a year for the past five years.

Jurgens said Hy-Vee has 126 dieticians on staff, including one in Topeka, who will help customers create diets designed to help customers with specific health issues.Hy-Vee has an upstairs room for a cooking school where the dietician can interact with customers.

Jurgens said the Topeka store will open with 360 employees but could grow to 500 in a year.

It is possible, he said, Hy-Vee will open a second store in Topeka, but no location has been determined.

He said Hy-Vee is active in the communities it serves. The board of directors at Thursday's meeting had $100,000 in requests from various communities, many of them for schools, scholarships and charities.

"We authorized every one of them," Jurgens said.

He said Hy-Vee also supports research for juvenile diabetes and supports athletic events, such as triathlons.

Ric Jurgens, Hy-Vee's president and chief executive, responded, saying it wasn't Hy-Vee's fault, and that the chain is a big supporter of UNI teams.

"The idea for the Cy-Hawk Series . . . did not originate with Hy-Vee," Jurgens wrote."Learfield Sports and Clear Channel Communications, the broadcast networks for Iowa and Iowa State athletics, contacted Hy-Vee and presented the promotional idea to us."

Hy-Vee signed on as lead sponsor, Jurgens wrote, because it seemed like a good "marketing opportunity."The sponsorship, he said, in no way indicates that "we consider Iowa and Iowa State to have superior athletic programs."
