Following the press conference, a tour of construction sites at the shopping center was led by Macerich Senior Vice President of Real Estate John Genovese and Development Manager Neil Jurgens.
Construction officially commenced on the 33-year-old mall's renaissance when City of San Buenaventura elected officials and staff, community leaders and mall neighbors joined Macerich representatives and retailers at a groundbreaking ceremony held on October 1, 1997.According to Genovese, major construction that got underway after the groundbreaking was work on a new 125,000-square-foot JCPenney department store scheduled for completion in March 1999 and a new 1,100-space, three-level parking structure anticipated to be ready for use in December of this year.
"We've also begun work on the new 162,000-square-foot Sears department store and accompanying 14,000-square-foot Sears auto center, with completion planned for November 1999," Genovese said."Renovation and reconfiguration of the common area and retail store space within the existing mall has also begun taking place, with the addition of a second level food court and stores."
