You also know why Mary Jubitz loves her job.Kids and literacy have been the passion of her entire career.
Jubitz is the CEO of the Oregon Children's Foundation, which operates SMART.The concept is beautifully simple: Adult volunteers come to a public school each week and spend an hour reading with two children. They also give the children two new SMART books per month to build a home library.Good things happen as a result, for both the adult and the child.
Jubitz would tell you good things happen for her as well.
"I am surrounded every day by skilled people who do this work because it is their passion; an outstanding, visionary board of directors; volunteers who make children a priority in their busy lives; donors who care about kids and their communities; and business leaders who support our work because they understand that today and tomorrow can only be assured by taking care of our young people," she said."This environment sparks continual excitement for me.Can it get any better than this?"
When Jubitz took the foundation job in 1994, SMART served children in 36 low-income schools. Now, 9,000 volunteers are engaged in reading with 12,000 children in 252 schools around the state.
Such numbers have the ring of success. But it's not enough for Jubitz or her board, led by SMART founder and former Gov.

"We must help communities deliver SMART in all 36 Oregon counties to assure that our mobile population of children from low-income families can have continuous support," Jubitz said."When adults in every community take time for children, Oregon will be a different place to live."
Goldschmidt, in his letter nominating Jubitz for The Business Journal's Women in Business awards, predicted that Jubitz will take SMART statewide within three years.

It's hard to imagine anyone more mission-driven than Jubitz.
