Perez invited several guests to join her for the presentation, including Jeff Joyce, who teaches at the Northwest School of the Arts, Assistant Superintendent for Exceptional Children Jane Rhyne and Executive Director for Professional Development Cathy Hammond.
    ...
Joyce, the Northwest School of the Arts teacher, has been honing his teaching skills for the past three summers at none other than Yale University as a participant of the Yale National Initiative, a program where teachers from across the nation get to rub elbows with one another and swap ideas. When it's over, participants bring the knowledge of new teaching skills back to their individual hives to share with colleagues and apply to students.

Joyce, a 13-year veteran of the teaching profession, characterized his experience at Yale as "invigorating."

"It was content driven and run by teachers, not from the top down," he said of the program.

So filled with ardor over his experiences, Joyce even penned a magazine article that appeared in a publication put out by the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute called "On Common Ground."The story was entitled "Why Teachers Need a Teachers Institute," and one excerpt sounds hauntingly familiar.

"The modern socio-political climate asks governments to seek solutions to overriding problems," Joyce wrote."And in public Ed it is only natural that the political superiors seeking to craft the cures quickly marshal bureaucrats to order. The result has been an absolute disaster of shifting paradigms that, over the years, have weighed heavily on the shoulders of the common classroom teachers who must bear the burden of every new quick fix that our (nation's) Edal gurus thrust upon us."

Calling an ace an ace and a spade a spade, Joyce also wrote, "The problems within professional development in our system (CMS) are well known.
    ...
Joyce went on to throw his support behind ongoing career development, and the need CMS has to push it to the maximum.

"The overall assumption would seem to be that all of us already have a rich knowledge of our varying disciplines," Joyce wrote.
