The difference between Wausau and other districts is that Wausau families in most cases already are connected to local service agencies in town, said Jeff Joyce, homeless liaison for the Wausau School District.

"That's always the million dollar question for the parent," says Joyce.

The earlier the staff notices issues, such as delays in fine motor skills and children who isolate themselves, the sooner potential behavioral or development problems can be addressed, said Jeff Joyce, director of pupil services for the Wausau School District.

Children display a wide range in pre-k abilities, he said.

Jeff Joyce, the director of Wausau Pupil Services, says, "Because the suspect was not apprehended and the police are still doing their work in the community, we went to a situation where parents could pick up their children earlier."

Parents were called to come pick up their children early.

Joyce says they didn't want any kids to walk home alone.
