   "I think Ruth, she's had a thirst for life and a willingness to try to make things better for people," local businessman Johnny Maxwell said of his former employee at the former Holiday Inn, currently the Ramada Inn.

   Johnson, born Oct. 3, 1906, entered Louisiana Tech, then known as Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, after graduating from Choudrant High School in 1925. She majored in math and minored in English during her tenure and earned a Class C Teacher's Certificate shortly after.
   
   Johnson's generosity and caring for others presented itself when she began teaching at Mount Union school in Union Parish so her brother Ray could continue with his education at Tech as a chemist.

   Following a stint at LSU to receive her master's degree, Johnson began teaching at Jonesboro-Hodge High School. Following stints in Caddo and Vermilion parishes, Johnson began making her mark teaching at Ruston High School in 1943.
   
   During her 25- year career at RHS, she taught algebra and trigonometry to anywhere between 150-180 students per year.
   
   Prior to her retirement, Johnson contacted Maxwell about a possible job as hostess at his restaurant.

   For the next 24 and a half years, Johnson began her second career as the greater to locals and travelers coming to one of Ruston's establishments.

   And, despite her 90-pound frame, Johnson demanded and got respect from teen-agers from several different generations.

   Though van Diest remembers Johnson as a tough teacher, like many of Miss Ruth's former students, she gained a lot from her former math instructor after graduating from high school.

   Though Johnson is known as a giver, a mentor and good friend to many people in Ruston and the surrounding communities, her mark on the teaching world was significant.
   
   In 2001, Johnson was recognized by the Tech College of Education as 2001-02 Alumnus of the Year.
