In 1987, Brent Johnson, the president of SecureAgent Software had a thriving consulting business that developed data management software for the airline industry. His software transferred reservation traffic data between IBM and UNISYS computers, integrating the national airlines of Europe with the Amadeus Reservation System created by Eastern Airlines and IBM.His clients included Iberia Airlines, Air France, FinnAir, Sabre, EDS and Lufthansa.
"I was paid to develop software products for my clients and I didn't own the work product or the intellectual property," says Johnson."Then my clients told me that they were concerned about the privacy of the data transferred through the reservation system.Data encryption software hadn't been developed for their applications and the airlines didn't want to spend the money or risk their resources to develop the products themselves. They wanted me to develop the technology for them but they agreed to let me own the products and all intellectual property rights to the technology I developed."
Johnson assembled his own product development team, formed a company and developed a suite of data encryption software products. He filed his first patents in 1991 and began licensing his security software to his customers shortly afterwards.

"Just like years ago when the European airlines needed to move traffic from IBM and UNISYS, we now use the same techniques to allow our customers to move data from Linux and Windows," says Johnson. -

Tulsa software firm bucks tech slump
Though the economy has been ailing for a few years, R. Brent Johnson says he always has felt secure about his company's future.
...
Johnson, who serves as president and chief executive, said SecureAgent has prospered by specializing in high-end software and hardware for customers that include Visa International, Bank of America Corp. and United Parcel Service Inc.
The company's wide range of products provides users with secure remote access to data centers, increases e-mail security with encryption and allows companies to create secure connections to various systems.
Customers usually pay between $200,000 and $300,000 to license SecureAgent Software products for a year, Johnson said.
Employing 18 people, Secure Agent Software's work force has remained stable during the past few years.
In 2000, Johnson forecast increasing his staff by 50 percent, but the economic downturn made that move impossible, he said.
"We're still in business, and in the grand scheme of things we haven't done too badly, because some of the other guys are not around anymore," Johnson said."As the economy picks up, we'll start to add people, but right now we're surviving in the economy we have."
Johnson, who moved SecureAgent Software to Tulsa from California in 1991 with two employees, said the company rang up about $5 million in sales last year.He predicts a 20 percent increase in 2003.
U.S. patents have been issued for the company's SecureNotes and IDG 9074 products, and a European patent was granted for its ServiceVision product, Johnson said.
"We protect what we develop with trademarks, patents and copyrights," he said."This way, we can work without interference from our competition."
To date, the U.S. Patent and Trademark office has granted the company eight patents for its products.SecureAgent Software also holds several European patents and is applying for others elsewhere, including Japan.
Johnson said Mayor Bill LaFortune recently agreed to test SecureAgent Software's latest product, called 9480.
