    LAYTON - Peter Wendel Johnson, 86, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at his home in Layton of cancer. He was born September 6, 1915 in Sunnyside, Utah to James Theodore and Elzina Larson Johnson. He married Norma Todd, daughter of W. Russell and Fannie Gagon Todd, of Roosevelt, Utah, on September 2, 1941 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

    Wendel was a High Priest in the Lorin Farr Stake and had many responsibilities in the church. He served as Bishop of the Ogden 21st Ward, in the Stake Presidency and High Council of the Weber State College Stake and was always a teacher and mentor.

    After graduation in 1933 from Uintah High School in Vernal, Utah, Wendel served three years in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific area. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission to the Western States from 1935 to 1937. He earned a B.S. degree and a M.A. degree from Brigham Young University and received a doctorate degree in Counseling and Guidance at Boston University in 1962. He returned to the east at various times to teach at Boston University and the University of Rhode Island.

    Wendel spent 35 years of service with the LDS Church Education System. He began as a Seminary teacher at Alterra and Roosevelt High Schools and at the State Industrial School in Ogden. After graduate school at Boston University, Dr. Johnson returned to Ogden and became Director of the LDS Institute of Religion at Weber State College where he served for ten years. He spent many years as a Personnel Specialist for CES, traveling throughout the western states before retiring in 1982. He became a counselor, confidant, and friend to many people.

    After his retirement, he and Norma served five LDS Church missions in Tampa Bay, Florida; Sacramento, California; Atlanta Georgia Temple; Denver Colorado Temple; and Brooklyn, New York. For many years they were ordinance workers in the Ogden LDS Temple.

    Wendel is survived by his wife of 61 years; five children, Phillip W. Johnson of Salt Lake City, Kathy (Ron) Taylor of Kaysville, Brent (Leila) Johnson of Centerville, Wendy (Ron) Hodson of Ferron, and Norma Jean Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Arlene Hauser and Beth Nelson of Salt Lake City; sisters-in-law, Ruby Johnson of Salt Lake City and Lela Johnson of Providence.

    Interment will be at the Roosevelt City Memorial Cemetery at approximately 4 p.m. in Roosevelt, Utah.
