Johnson named community coordinator for parent institute
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Marilou G. Johnson has been named community support coordinator of the Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership for the southeast/south-central Kentucky region.
A resident of Richmond, Johnson will work with participants in the award-winning program as they learn strategies and techniques to enhance their effectiveness as advocates for improving the academic achievement of students.
The institute, a program of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, focuses on creating a new level of parent engagement in Kentucky by providing training that gives parents both the information and the skills to expand their role in their local schools.
Johnson, a Bell County native and a graduate of Morehead State University, brings more than a decade of business and civic leadership to her new position. Most recently a field marketing coordinator with A&W Restaurants in Lexington, she also has been a business owner and a commercial account executive for Kentucky Utilities Co.
She is an institute fellow, having been a member of the 1999-2000 class, and has been active with Kiwanis, the United Way, the Bell County Chamber of Commerce and the American Cancer Society.
"Marilou's interests and commitment to Kentucky education, combined with her knowledge of Kentucky's southeast/south-central region, made her an ideal candidate to continue the work of the institute begun in 1997," said institute manager Kerry Zack. -
