"This is just wonderful for our downtown," said Chuck Johnson, chairman of the Downtown Muskegon Development Corp., the non-profit owner of the former Muskegon Mall property being redeveloped into a "city center" commercial district.

"Baker is a proven institution that will bring quality to our downtown," Johnson said.

The college is building for a program that could have up to 390 students in the coming years, necessitating overflow parking, Johnson said.
    ...
Johnson said the college will use it for overflow parking as needed but open the parking spaces for public use or the needs of other developers. However, at some point, the college may need exclusive use of the entire lot.

"In talking with the city, we decided to get Baker downtown first and worry about future parking issues later," Johnson said.

If the Comerica Building remains vacant without hope of redevelopment, the owners will have to consider demolition, Downtown Muskegon Development Chairman Chuck Johnson said. The mall property owners are a consortium of non-profit institutions including the Community Foundation for Muskegon County and the Muskegon Area Chamber of Commerce.

"We may be forced to tear it down," Johnson said of the bank building that dominates the Muskegon skyline."We are concerned that if it goes unattended much longer it will face serious deterioration."

But Johnson said the Downtown Muskegon Development board isn't putting any deadline on finding the right developer with the right redevelopment plan.

"Maybe if we are here a year from now, we will have some serious decisions to make," he said.

In fact, it wasn't until I read about founding Fool Tom Gardner's approach to picking home run stocks -- for the market-annihilating Motley Fool Hidden Gems small-cap service -- that its importance began to sink in with me. One of Tom's big winners, II-VI (pronounced "two-six"), was founded in 1971 by Dr. Carl Johnson, who continues to be the company's chairman and largest single shareholder.
