The four boys and the four girls games are planned for Saturday, VPA Associate Director Bob Johnson said.

Burlington High will host the Division I games at the D.G. Weaver Athletic Complex, while the College of St. Joseph will be the site of both D-IV games, Johnson said.

Johnson said a decision will be made Monday on whether to send the D-II games to Vergennes or Randolph. The D-III game will be hosted at the school not hosting D-II, he said.

Johnson said the games are likely to be at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., but could be adjusted.

"It's a beautiful park," Vermont Principals Association Activities Director Bob Johnson said.

"The Mountaineers have said they will move their home games so that we can play the games there. Brian Gallagher (the Mountaineers' general manager) is very excited about being the host."

Johnson said the VPA's baseball committee has been looking into the Montpelier facility as a site for a couple of years. There has been uncertainty about Centennial Field and its tenant, the New York-Penn League's Vermont Lake Monsters.
    ...
Johnson said another place under consideration had been Southern Vermont College's baseball facility in Bennington, but not having lights precluded that as a championship site.

Another change in high school playoffs sites certain to be discussed is the semifinals in girls ice hockey. The semifinals have been at Norwich University's Kreitzberg Arena.

"On a good night, you might get 100 to 150 people," Johnson said.

The alternative would be to play the semifinal game on the home ice of the higher-seeded team.

"But the thing we have to be careful of is whether it is a Title IX issue or not. I have heard both sides. A lot of coaches are saying than would rather play at home in a packed arena," Johnson said.
    ...
I have heard mixed reviews on it," Johnson said.

Johnson said the spring championships have been moved back a week. Instead of titles being decided for baseball, softball and boys and girls lacrosse June 16-18, they will be June 9-11. Track (June 4) and golf (June 7-8) are unchanged.

Johnson said the calendar committee is recommending that the same weeks be used for the next three years.

"We do feel this is a calendar that is in the best interest of the students," Johnson said in an e-mail.

According to Bob Johnson, the VPA's Director of Student Activities, the VPA can only suggest where a school should play.

Johnson said that he had discussed the prospect of MSJ moving out of Division I with representatives of the school in Montpelier and he thought that they had made considerable headway. But when Johnson heard from MSJ later on, they had changed their tune and decided to stay in Division I.

That's bad news if you ask Bob Johnson, associate executive director of the Vermont Principals Association. A state calendar would help reduce conflicts that come up with scheduling of sporting events, especially the championships in the spring season.

"I hear from parents every spring about how we're affecting graduation dates and things of that nature, and they're absolutely correct," he said. "We are."

Some schools let out by May 30; others go into the third week of June -- complicating scheduling and occasionally forcing students to return to school if they want to participate with their teams in playdowns.

Johnson would love to see a statewide calendar: "We're a small state, and it seems like somehow we should be able to come up with an agreement.
