"At this year's election the electoral roll will slam shut on the day the writs are issued, which is almost always on the day the election is called," Mr Jenkins said."Those already on the roll will now get only three days to update their details."

"Under the old laws voters had seven days to enrol, and the Electoral Commission had seven days to run a campaign to remind people to enrol," Mr Jenkins explained."After the last election 408,770 voters across Australia enrolled for the first time, re-enrolled, or changed their details."

"If you divide that figure by the 150 House of Representatives seats around Australia, that is 2,720 people in every electorate," Mr Jenkins said."These so-called reforms are even more outrageous in light of the fact that last week the Howard Government admitted more than 410,000 of 18 to 25 year-old Australians were missing from the electoral roll."

"This is not governing in the interests of young people," Mr Jenkins said."Young people have enough to worry about without being locked out of the democratic process because they fail to comply with the complex requirments of new laws designed to favour the Howard Government."

"Under these new laws, by the time a young person gets home from study or work and finds out an election has been called, the electoral roll will be closed," Mr Jenkins said.

"Whether they support the Labor Party or not, I want to ensure that as many young people from Scullin as possible who are eligible to vote get a chance to have their say on polling day," Mr Jenkins said.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Harry Jenkins, said the incident was a reminder the lower house may want to consider a code of conduct.

Manager of opposition business, Joe Hockey, asked Mr Jenkins to urgently investigate the "repugnant" incident.
    ...
Mr Jenkins said he would take some time to consider whether or not he had the power to investigate the incident and would report back to the lower house.

What I am clear in my own mind about is that this is another reminder that it probably is time that this house very much considers a code of conduct," he said.

Harry Jenkins has called for debate on whether the Christian prayer, which has been recited at the start of each parliamentary sitting since federation in 1901, should be reworded or replaced. "One of the most controversial aspects of the parliamentary day I found from practically day two is the prayer," Jenkins, speaker of the House of Representatives, told The Sunday Telegraph.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Harry Jenkins, has called for a public debate about whether the daily prayer should be rewritten or replaced, The Herald-Sun reports.
    ...
"Mr Jenkins questioned if the prayer, inserted into the standing orders in 1901, was relevant to the 21st century." It was composed 2000 years ago not in 1901, and has been used in parliaments for centuries before 1901.

I for one support Harry Jenkins and Bob Brown in seeking the deletion of facing mecca or praying in a parliament that is supposed to represent me too
    ...
I don't think Harry Jenkins has any problem with a time for Prayer/Reflection, and neither do I. The problem is that Australia is not a Christian theocracy, or is it?
    ...
Tony, you'd better discuss your argument with Mr Jenkins.
