Fox Chapel boys basketball coach resigns -... - [Cached Version]
Published on: 2/15/2005    Last Visited: 2/15/2005

Veteran boys basketball coach Harry Jenkins submitted his resignation Friday after 25 years as Fox Chapel's varsity head coach.

Jenkins said he is stepping down because of personal reasons.

"After 25 years, it is time to move on and give Fox Chapel a chance to bring in a new face," Jenkins said.
    ...
A teacher in the school district for 35 years, Jenkins said time constraints added to his decision.

"It takes an enormous amount of time to be a coach," Jenkins said."I have coached in one way or another since I've been at the district. It's time to take a break."

Jenkins, 57, led the Foxes to 14 playoff appearances, and won two section titles. The Foxes reached the WPIAL championship game in 1988 and 1998.Their last playoff appearance was in 2002.

With more than 300 career wins, Jenkins said he would still like to coach, perhaps at the college level.

"I've really enjoyed coaching," Jenkins said."I've had a lot of wonderful players and a lot of support in the district."

Jenkins said he would have liked to accomplish more, but he takes pride that the Foxes, he hopes, are known as a team that always gives 110 percent.

"We never give up," he said.

Fox Chapel's Jenkins retires - [Cached Version]
Published on: 2/15/2005    Last Visited: 2/15/2005

Harry Jenkins retired as coach of the Fox Chapel High School boys' basketball team after leading the program for 25 seasons.

Jenkins posted a 316-272 career record and guided the Foxes to the WPIAL Class AAAA championship game in the 1997-98 and 1987-88 seasons.

"Overall, I have to say that it was a positive experience," Jenkins said."I developed a lot of personal friendships with parents and colleagues and lifelong relationships with many of my players."

Jenkins has not retired from his teaching position as drivers' education teacher at Fox Chapel and he hasn't closed the door on returning to coaching in the future.

"Right now, it is just a case where things are a bit too time consuming," he said.

Foxes defeat Gateway; Neither team scores in last 4:41... - [Cached Version]
Published on: 1/30/2002    Last Visited: 1/30/2002

Fox Chapel Coach Harry Jenkins didn't care how his team looked in the final few minutes, but he did care about the outcome.

"If you said we wouldn't score for the final four minutes and we'd still win, I'd have said that can't happen," Jenkins said."But we kept them from scoring, too, and, when you're fighting for a playoff spot, you'll take the win."

The Foxes are 7-3 in the section (13-8 overall) and tied for second place with Central Catholic.
    ...
"Everyone has aspirations of winning a section title, but we just want to get back to the playoffs this year," said Jenkins, whose team was 4-20 a year ago.

    ...
That was the key to the game," Jenkins said.

Gateway had its chances to win. After Fox Chapel turned the ball over with 1:10 remaining, Gateway held the ball until Polizzano missed a shot with nine seconds left. The ball was knocked out of bounds with 4.8 seconds remaining. After a Gateway timeout, the Gators' Nick Bartel missed a long 3-pointer from the right corner.

Polizzano, a 6-1 senior forward, led Gateway with 14 points, but Gateway struggled offensively.
