HARRIET HOUSTON JENKINS , 60 , went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday , July 9 , 2001 after a brief illness.She was preceded in death by her parents , George Phifer Houston and Harriet Hoyle Houston of Charlotte , North Carolina.She attended Queens College there and wrote for the Charlotte Observer.She also was a newspaper feature writer for The Jacksonville Journal in Florida.A Houston resident for thirty-three years , a member of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church for thirty years , she served as President of the Memorial Newcomers Club , President of the Assistance League of Houston , Chairman of the Heart Sunday for Harris County , board member of the Houston Chapter of the American Heart Association , board member of the Museum of Southern History , Chairman of the Hedwig Park , which won an Environmental Improvement Award from the City of Houston , Co-Chairman of the Confederate Ball , a member of the Lady Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution , MENSA , YWCA Distinguished Woman Award , Covenant Bible Study Leader , Kappa Delta Alumnae Association and many other organizations.A long-time real estate broker , she was associated with Martha Turner Properties and was in the Circle of Excellence.Survivors include her husband , Stephen Lawrence Jenkins ; their children Lawrence Kyle Harris Jenkins and wife Cynthia , Stephen Lawrence Jenkins , Jr. and wife Valerie , David Phifer Jenkins and fiancé Beth Dawn Brandes ; grandchildren Chase Allen Jenkins , Noah James Houston Jenkins , Rachel Hope Jenkins , Laura Elizabeth Jenkins , Stephen Lawrence Jenkins , III and the late John Matthew Jenkins.She is also survived by her brother George Phifer Houston , Jr. and wife Emily of Charlotte ; sister Josephine Houston Roberts and husband Stanley of Purvis , Mississippi and in-laws John Allen Jenkins and wife Linda of Camden , Maine , as well as several nieces and nephews.
