In order to automate protocols , all the data must be electronic , says Robert Jenders , MD , MS , assistant professor of medicine at Columbia. The system is based on a clinical data repository that collects and codes information from the various clinical systems in a structured vocabulary the CDSS can understand. An application called the clinical event monitor watches for any bit of data in the repository that has a rule attached to it , and if appropriate , sends an alert back to the database.Alerts are then forwarded to physicians by email , fax , or as a message in the computerized patient record ( CPR ) system. When protocols are automated , Jenders predicts a substantial savings in time now spent managing the paper protocol system.

The Proof is in the System. Many clinical decision support systems incorporate rules-based expert technology or other forms of artificial intelligence to crunch data , but the most important asset of a good decision support system is the knowledge base behind it ( see Keeping Protocols Fresh below ).
