Dr Jay became Executive Director of the Canadian Photonics Consortium in April 2005.Previous to that he was Chief Technology Officer at Intelligent Photonics Control (2002-2005), where his responsibilities included technology strategy, creation of Intellectual Property, and new market identification.
Prior to that, as 'Executive-in-Residence' at the University of Ottawa, he was involved in setting up a new Photonics Research Centre, with high-calibre faculty Chair appointments from around the world.He was also instrumental in developing collaboration opportunities between the University and Industry, as well as teaching a graduate course in device technology.He was previously Director of Global External Research for Nortel Networks, managing interactions between Nortel and Universities in North America, Europe, and other countries where Nortel has laboratories.
Dr Jay is a specialist in III-V semiconductors and devices (especially gallium arsenide) and has over 20 years experience in both the R&D and manufacturing phases of introducing new semiconductor technology into telecoms products, especially electro-optic technologies for high speed fibre transmission systems.Prior to joining Nortel he worked for 5 years at Thomson-CSF in France, and before that for 4 years at Plessey (now Bookham) in the UK.
Dr Jay is a member of the UK Institute of Physics, as well as the IEEE and OSA.He has a B.Sc. in Physics and a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering, both from Nottingham University in England.In 1993 he was the first non-US chairman of the 15th IEEE GaAs IC Symposium in San Jose, CA.He is author on more than 40 scientific papers (including 8 invited presentations at conferences) as well as 9 patents.
He lives in Stittsville, Ontario, and has interests including parenting, gliding, printing, and music, especially choral music and a cappella vocal jazz.
