A project has been started to upgrade all existing JANET links to HEIs to a minimum of 2Mbit/s.
    ...
Bath, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Daresbury, who used to be connected to two other NOCs, are now connected to a single core NOC.
    ...
Traffic to and from the Belfast NOC is being carried using XoT.
    ...
BT now report regularly to JANET(UK) on the performance of the SMDS links during each month.

BT now report regularly to JANET(UK) on the performance of the SMDS links during each month.
    ...
The SMDS link to ULCC has been 'upgraded' to access class 3 (16Mbit/s) because it was running close to its access class 2 limit and peaking above it occasionally.
    ...
BT promised a Customer Network Management Service (CNMS) in 1994 and this has still not been made available.
    ...
JANET(UK) have been asked to participate in the first trials but these have been put back to early 1996.
    ...
Part of this means that BT are still unable to provide full traffic statistics for the SuperJANET SMDS links.
    ...
BT had planned to do a full SMDS network upgrade on Christmas Day, this was a precursor to the CNMS.
    ...
JANET(UK) has been working to put in place contracts with all of the institutions that provide JANET Connection Points.
    ...
These will either act as full Managed Access Point (MAP) connection points and do all fault reporting for institutions links that they host or will be Points of Presence (PoPs).

These will either act as full Managed Access Point (MAP) connection points and do all fault reporting for institutions links that they host or will be Points of Presence (PoPs).
    ...
Institutions connected to PoPs will report problems direct to the JANET NOSC at ULCC and not to the point that physically hosts the remote end of their JANET link.
    ...
Operation of the primary name servers for ac.uk continues.

    1.8 Name Registration Service

    Operation of the NRS continues.
    ...
Support for character-only terminals will be provided via public access WWW clients (Lynx), which will be available via the TACS service for those who still connect using PADS/X25.
    ...
Work has been done on bringing a White Pages directory service into being during 2Q96.
    ...
The service will initially use X.500 to integrate other White Pages technologies which JANET customers have in use locally.
    ...
JANET(UK) is gradually installing its own radio time signal receivers as opposed to relying on receivers owned by JANET institutions We are grateful to Newcastle and Cambridge Universities for providing access to their receivers during the pilot and continuing access during the full service.
    ...
Most of our receivers use the time signal transmitted by the US DoD NAVSTAR GPS navigational satellites and reports have been seen of Ministry of Defence GPS jamming trials.
    ...
In the quarter to the end of December, 86 reports were received by JANET-CERT and presentations given at two conferences.

There has recently been an increase in computer intrusions at JANET sites.Over the past six months JANET-CERT has received 24 reports where a system has been compromised and root status obtained by the intruder. On six occasions investigations have revealed evidence of a password sniffer. In nearly every case the intrusion had gone unnoticed for several weeks before discovery.
    ...
There have been some instabilities in the BT IBDNS service over the last few months, but BT and DANTE have worked hard to eliminate the problems and the network is now more stable.
    ...
Negotiations to provide two separate paths to the USA, one based on the equivalent of 4*2Mbit/s of capacity and one based on 6*1.5Mbit/s of capacity have been concluded. We expect to have the first in service before the end of January and the second by mid March.
    ...
The access class of the ULCC SMDS connection has been increased from 10 Mbit/s to 16Mbit/s to cope with additional load requirements.

Attempts to further spread the load between the ULCC and Telehouse SMDS links have met with partial failure due to the difficulties a number of campus routers have experienced in dealing with the additional number of routes they were asked to recognise. As a result of this, we have decided that all US access will be concentrated at ULCC and all European access at Telehouse.
    ...
Two of these are concerned with providing a 34Mbit/s IP data interconnection between the National Research Networks (NRNs): a proposal from the PNOs of France, UK, Germany and Italy will interconnect the NRNs of those four countries, while a proposal from Unisource will similarly interconnect the NRNs in the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and NORDUnet.

    ...
These two networks will themselves interconnect probably in the UK and in Switzerland, but further planning is required to determine this.Other European NRNs will be able to connect via spurs to one of the two main components.Details of both these proposals are currently being negotiated.

The third component involves the experiments of ATM-based multi- service networking.
    ...
Version 4 of the TACS guide has been issued.

The old GPT based PSPDN system was switched off on 2 January 1996.Users who have not registered to use the new service should contact service@ja.net.
    ...
JANET(UK) is investigating the possibility of providing a news reader service to small sites which do not have the capability to run a full news service.
    ...
To this end a large server has been ordered and will be installed and is expected to be offering a service during 2Q96.

    1.18 JANET Liaison Desk

JANET(UK) has decided that 'JANET Customer Service' is a more appropriate name for the group that provides the service specified under SLA A1.18 'JANET Liaison Desk'.
    ...
Electronic mail for JANET Customer Service should be sent to service@ja.net (X.400: S=service; O=janet; P=uk.ac; C=gb;) however mail sent to previous addresses will be redirected. Please note that the GEC 4000 system is no longer being used to host their mail service and the explicit address on the GEC should not be used.

JANET Customer Service provides a primary point of contact for all enquiries concerning JANET services and requests for information.Enquiries can be made by telephone, fax, post and electronic mail.
    ...
JANET(UK) produced the following documentation during the period October to December 1995.
    ...
About forty sites in Europe and the USA agreed to supply regular logs for the analysis of international web and ftp access from the UK.Several documents were produced including the first set of analysis on the international web and ftp access and a ftp caching software specification.

A ftp caching software is under development and is scheduled to be available by June 1996.Those sites who are interested in improving their international network access services and wish to participate in the pilot site test for ftp cache software, should contact the John Kwan (email John.Kwan@ja.net) or refer to the current projects on the JANET(UK) web server for further information (the URL is http://www.tech.janet.ac.uk).
    ...
The ACOL (Asynchronous COLlaboration) project will publish its first report in February.
    ...
This report provides an overview of two document interchange conversion techniques, ODA and SGML and discusses both commercial and academic developments of ODA and SGML converters.
    ...
Design and interworking of converters is also looked at.

A paper will be presented at Networkshop.
