Many in the community will be aware that JANET(UK) is being market tested.
...
The process started at the end of last year, and in January the JISC issued an Invitation to Tender (ITT) for the provision of operational services of the JANET network.
...
JANET(UK) was one of the four companies short listed to respond to the ITT.
...
JANET(UK) has been working hard to prepare its bid, and I am happy to report that we have submitted our proposal to the JISC in advance of the deadline.
...
We have produced a proposal that is fully compliant with the requirements of the ITT, and I believe it has all the qualities needed to win the contract for JANET(UK).

...
The time table has the process scheduled for completion in July.
JANET(UK) is grateful for the support we have received from the community during this exercise.
...
A project began to upgrade all IP connections to JANET to be 2Mbit/s, for HEIs which were not part of SuperJANET Phase 2 or MAN developments.
...
The JCPs are of one of two types, either Points of Presence (POPs) or Managed Access Points (MAPs).

The JCPs are of one of two types, either Points of Presence (POPs) or Managed Access Points (MAPs).
...
The POPs provide a hosting service for the siting of JANET(UK) owned and managed equipment.
...
JANET(UK)'s role is to ensure the quality of service provided for JANET access is of a standard that at least matches the SLA.
...
Operation of the primary name servers for ac.uk continues.
...
All the radio time signal receivers have now been deployed.
...
Where incidents can be traced back to a responsible body JANET(UK) has continued to make relevant enquiries; these are never likely to achieve any redress or sanction - indeed, none have yet done so.
...
The withdrawal of Grey Book continues, and JANET(UK) has again advised customer organizations on their use of NRS and DNS registrations to maintain connectivity.
...
In the quarter to the end of March 1996, 90 reports were received by JANET-CERT.During February the two day Workshop on Firewalls for Computer Security was repeated in Liverpool, Edinburgh and London (see 3.4.1).
...
Evidence has also been recovered about intrusions at non-JANET sites.
...
A 2Mbit/s link to HEANET (EIRE) has been installed.
...
An order has been placed for an increase in access bandwidth to IBDNS from 4 Mbit/s to 8Mbit/s, primarily to improve access to Germany.
...
An upgrade to the equivalent of four times 2 Mbit/s (supplied through a new US point of presence in New Jersey) came into service in early March, by which time performance on the original links was seriously affected by overload. The new provision has made a significant difference, in that far fewer transfer are now failing and there is spare capacity out of hours.Peak time performance is still inadequate, however.A second tranche of additional capacity (6*1.5 Mbit/s to ANSNet) was installed in late March, and tested at the router level, but was not yet available to users at the end of the month.

The present plans, which require further study and refinement, are based on the establishment of two interconnected sub-networks: one supplied by the main PNOs of France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, with the other supplied by Unisource on behalf of their parent companies, the main PNOs in the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

We have noticed that the TACS has become congested at times. Some attempts to re- balance the load have been made, but we would like to remind users that it is better to use the service name appropriate to the region you are in rather than the generic name telnet.ja.net. i.e. south.telnet.ja.net, mid.telnet.ja.net, lon.telnet.ja.net and north.telnet.ja.net.Use of these names helps to balance the load between the two convertors.
...
Management of authorization at the relays (restricting their use to JANET customers) has been improved.
...
We have been able to provide temporary feeds from the PSINet public news server while we arrange for feeds to be available from within JANET. (Note we shall be using the name PSINet in the future as EUnet GB were taken over last year by PSINet).
...
