Soon after joining ASTM in 1986, James helped to bring about the formation of Subcommittee B09.11 on Near Full Density Powder Metallurgy Materials for an industry area not being addressed.James has been chairman of B09.11 since its inception, and he has been instrumental in the development of powder forged steel parts standards by the group.James is also chairman of Task Group B09.05.01 on Soft Magnetic Materials, which has been organized to work on a topic of interest to B09 and to ASTM Committee A06 on Magnetic Properties, of which James is also a member.
James is an active participant in standards development work and interlaboratory studies throughout B09, and he has also been an important contributor to the work of B09.01 on Terminology. In addition, he has participated in the powder metallurgy activities of the International Organization for Standardization.
In his professional engineering work, James has concentrated on dispersion hardened zirconium alloys, powder forged ferrous materials, high performance ferrous powder metallurgy materials, training programs for ferrous powder metallurgy materials, and spherical carrier particles for xerography.
Prior to joining the staff at Hoeganaes Corp., James was an engineer first at Round Oak Steel and later at GKN Technology, both in the United Kingdom.James earned a B.Sc. with honors and a Ph.D., both in metallurgy, at the Institute of Science and Technology of the University of Manchester, Manchester, England.
