Frank was married to Virginia "Ginnie" Glass James for 58 years.
Mr. James was a 1941 graduate of Union High School. During his senior year, he received the Outstanding Athletic Sportsmanship Award. A Veteran of World War II, he attained the rank of Master Sergeant while fighting as a B-17 Tail Gunner in the United States Army Air Corps. He was highly decorated, his awards included the Purple Heart for injuries received during combat.
Mr. James was employed by Stewart and Everett Theaters during the 40 years he managed the Duncan Theatre on Main Street. Elected to serve the people of the City of Union as City Councilman for 22 years, he served eight years as Mayor Pro-Tem. A lifelong member of Grave United Methodist Church, he served the church as a member of the Board of Stewards and the Board of Trustees. He was active on the Carnegie Library Board, the Council on Aging, the United Way Board, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Board and the Salvation Army Board. He was a 40-year member of the Union Chamber of Commerce and the Merchants Association. At the time of his death, he served as Chairperson of the Union County Fair Board.
Mr. James was a member of the American Legion for 48 years, the Veterans of Foreign Wars for 44 years (10 years as Commander) and a member of the Disabled American Veterans for 41 years (8 years as Commander). He was a member of the 301st Veterans Association and the 15th Air Association.
In 1995, after 40 years of service in the Lion's Club, Frank was presented its highest honor, the Melvin Jones Award. In 1966, he received the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian award given by the governor or the State of South Carolina. -
