Sarah James was appointed Lecturer in Education in January 2004, having previously worked on the primary PGCE course and having studied in the University of Hull Her subject main subject specialisms are science and RE, but her professional interests and rôles are far wider.She is also a member of the University's Interdisciplinary Spirituality Group (ISG) [see http://www.hull.ac.uk/php/isg/ ].
Prior to training and working as a primary teacher, she worked as a health science commissioning editor, in London, for 11 years.She originally trained as a nurse, then gained a BSc Hons in anthropology from UCL, and also gained a Diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1998 from ITHMA in London.
Sarah's previous research has focused on Year 5 children's questions on death and dying, the educational contexts for which relate both to community-centred pastoral care, and the 'normalisation' of death in the curriculum; Year 6 children's perceptions of science; and science and creativity.She was also regional researcher in 2005 for a national project on teaching about slavery.
Her latest research, also conducted in 2005, relates to spiritual development in initial teacher training for which she was awarded a Masters in Educational Studies, with distinction, by the University of Hull.Her doctoral research will also be conducted in the field of spirituality and spiritual development.
In addition to teaching science and RE on the Primary PGCE Programme, Sarah is also Programme Director for the BA Hons in Learning and Teaching (Learning Support).She also teaches regularly on the MA in Educational Studies programme; supervises MA dissertation students; and supervises primary trainee teachers during their teaching practice placements. -
