Mr. Brian Ray James

For this exercise, our Outreach Coordinator, Brian Ray James, played the part of a person transported by a time machine from the days of the Roman empire into our culture.Brian told us about things we take for granted that he found amazing -- glass in the windows, electric lights and "horseless chariots."

Then, since Brian was so excited about new technologies, I tried to tell him about the two robotic rovers that have been exploring the surface of Mars for the last five years.Suddenly, Brian heard, but did not comprehend.How could we send a craft to a god?No, no, I explained.We didn't send a rocket to the god Mars, but to the planet.But Brian could not understand the concept of a planet that circles the sun.

Eco-Justice Ministries is delighted to announce that Brian Ray James has joined our staff as our new Outreach Coordinator.Brian will be working (part-time) to build closer ties with congregations in Colorado.We are delighted that Brian is part of our team, and we look forward to his help in strengthening our local constituency.

Brian joined the Eco-Justice Ministry team as Outreach Coordinator in May, 2008.He holds his undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo and this past March completed a Master of Applied Science in Environmental Policy & Management from the University of Denver.

Brian is an active member of Saint John's Episcopal Cathedral, serving as an acolyte, a verger, a table host for the cathedral's adult confirmation program, and a founding member of the Saint John's Green Team.As Brian moved through graduate school, he began giving a lot of thought to the relationship between what he was studying and his faith journey.As Outreach Coordinator for Eco-Justice Ministries, Brian is taking action on those thoughts, and is looking forward to helping churches develop their own eco-justice programs and work together for the good of God's creation and sustaining its bounty for future generations.

Brian is married to Sarah McAfee and with her is care-giver to two wonderful felines, Tumnus & D'Artagnan.

Brian James has advice for Harris.

James can empathize.For the past 18 years, people have assumed his sons are twins.They are not.

They are, however, Harris' teammates.James is the father of freshman cornerback Jacques Rickerson and freshman tailback Brandon James.

"It was scary," said Brian James, who now works as a regional supervisor for the St. John's County parks and recreation department.

With an offer of help from his own mother, Linda, and the understanding of young mothers Coretta Blount (Brandon's mother) and Yolanda Rickerson and their families, Brian James went to Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., where he set receiving records and - more importantly, he said - earned a degree.

He returned to St. Augustine after college, and a few years later Brandon moved in.When the boys were in sixth grade, Brian and Brandon moved near Jacques.

"Make the kids your focus," said Brian James, who swore he never would follow in the footsteps of his own absentee father."Be a father to them.

As Brian James did, Harris will miss some of his children's firsts.

The hard part comes after graduation, Brian James said.Sure, NFL dollars or a white-collar job might make life easier, but children need love more than they need money.

James pressed the pause button on his personal life until after his sons finished high school.At age 35, he married for the first time.He has another son on the way.

Harris now faces the same choice James did.

That's the payoff, said James.

"Things happen in life," James said.
