And under Al's skillful leadership as Treasurer over the past couple of years, we find ourselves in the best financial condition the Band has been in recent memory…allowing us to set aside funds for a future overseas competition.
In the survey that many of us completed last year, some of you indicated that you felt the Board was a "closed" organization that conducts its business "in secret."Although this is hardly the case, the fact that Board meetings had been held on the first Thursday of the month during the day could preclude some Band members from participating.To address this concern, we have committed to conduct one meeting a quarter on Tuesday night prior to practice.The first time we did this was December 4th, and guess what…no one other than Board members came!The next scheduled Tuesday-night Board meeting is April 2nd.We encourage you to attend.

Along with approving the budget, the Board has opened and placed $20,000 in a new investment account in an attempt to increase the earning potential of the cash we have on hand.The account will be split evenly between a 3-month CD, a bond-based mutual fund, and two stock-based funds.Between the CD, remaining cash in our checking account, and new income from performances, the band should be able to meet both budget and cash flow needs.The goal is to have the investment do a parade for us, in other words, earn over $1000 annually to support the operating budget.The following is a summary of the 2001-2002 budget approved by the Board.
