  Patrick Imbardelli, 46, resigned from his position as chief executive of the firm's Asia Pacific division following an internal review, which came shortly after the firm announced its intention to appoint him to the company's board.
  
  A company spokesman said that Mr Imbardelli, who joined the group in 2000, had claimed he had three university degrees, including an undergraduate degree in hotel administration from Victoria University in Australia, and Bachelor and Master degrees from Cornell University in America.

  However, during the review the company discovered that Mr Imbardelli in fact did not hold any of the qualifications.
  
  "He had attended some classes but did not graduate," the company spokesman said."We have taken this matter extremely seriously."
  
  Mr Imbardelli joined Bass, a forerunner to InterContinental Hotels, in 2000 and was appointed as managing director of the Asia Pacific region in 2003.

  Patrick Imbardelli was on the verge of being appointed to InterContinental's board when the company learned that the Singapore-based executive did not have degrees from Cornell University and Australia's Victoria University as he had claimed.

  Commentary: Not the first time that an executive has been called out for lying on their résumé.What is interesting, however, is how public Intercontinental is being by revealing the reason for Mr. Imbardelli's dismissal.There are plenty of resignations each year from corporate leaders where the real reason (including résumé fraud) is politely ignored and the departing executive is allowed to maintain their dignity and reputation.
  
  This is not one of the them.
  
  Intercontinental obviously felt a compulsion to clearly disclose Mr. Imbardelli's fraud.The first reason may have been that they did not want investors thinking that his departure might have been related to something else in the business being awry (like the speculative stock sell-off resulting from Wellpoint CFO's resignation for personal conduct last week).
