    Indianapolis, Ind. - The New England Revolution selected midfielder Wells Thompson out of Wake Forest University with the fifth overall selection and Generation adidas midfielder/defender Amaechi Igwe out of Santa Clara University with the 12th overall selection in the first round of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft, conducted today at the Indianapolis Convention Center.

    Igwe, 19, is a current member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team and a member of the Generation adidas program having signed with MLS after one season at Santa Clara.In just one campaign with the Broncos, Igwe earned All-West Coast Conference honorable mention honors and All-Freshman Team honors, scoring five goals and adding three assists while starting 20 of the 23 games in which he played.

    Igwe played with the Under-20 Team in both 2005 and 2006 after starting for the U.S. Under-17 squad at left back in 2005.He attended the IMG Soccer Academy in Florida, joining U.S. Soccer's Residency Program in September of 2004.

    Another rookie, Amaechi Igwe, the Revs' second 2007 SuperDraft pick, taken12th overall in the first round, joins the team after just one year at Santa Clara and time with the U.S. Under-20 National Team. .

    The 18-year-old midfielder/defender wasn't totally aware he was on the Revs' radar during the months leading up to the draft.Though he originally felt his selection by the Revs was unexpected, he is looking forward to his first professional season under head coach Steve Nicol and his assistants Paul Mariner and Gwynne Williams.

    "I knew (the Revs) were looking for left footers," Igwe said."Coach can really develop players at a young age and brings them along really well.I'm looking forward to learning from them."

    In addition to getting to know the coaches, Igwe and his fellow rookies have been getting familiar with one other and the rest of the team, and he admits it's been easier than he expected so far.
