The model, said David J. Icove, might help investigators pinpoint the cause of the 1:08 a.m. Feb. 7 blaze that consumed three warehouses.

    >

"It's not a substitute for investigation, but it can help model what may or may not have happened," Icove said Friday.

Icove unveiled the computer program in a press conference at Tennessee Associated Electric on Jackson Avenue. He explained how he is gathering information for the computer program so it can help determine how the fire spread so quickly.
    ...
Icove is adjunct assistant professor at the UT College of Engineering, but his work history includes more than an academic degree.

From 1980-83 he commanded the Knoxville Fire Department's Fire Investigation Unit.He worked in the FBI as a profiler for 10 years and then joined the Tennessee Valley Authority police division, where he worked until 2006.

Icove has been reviewing photos and video of the fire. Those shots will help the computer program map the progress of flames throughout the three buildings.

For now, Icove said he is focusing on the six-story warehouse at 505 Jackson Ave., where the fire is thought to have started.Icove said he has to measure every door and window in the building and determine which ones were open when the fire erupted.

Using eyewitness accounts, architectural renderings, photos and an inventory of contents, the computer program will help provide a map of the fire, he said.

"We were very lucky in this case with the richness of information," said Icove, who has applied the fire model to a 2,000-year-old burned Roman site.

He said people in the private sector are paid about $250 an hour to build the computer model he is constructing. He is doing it for free.
