Tony Iannelli, president of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, worked on a Mack assembly line from 1971 to 1974, making $8 an hour and health benefits. It was an ideal first job, he said, though a boss told him he'd be better off in a job where he used his mouth, not his hands.

When the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce received an offer from the Hispanic American Organization in November on its Walnut Street building, chamber President Tony Iannelli said then that several downtown Allentown sites interested the Chamber. The HAO wanted to move to the Chamber building because it needed a larger headquarters. Its previous site, at the school it runs on S. Fourth Street, was bursting at the seams. The Roberto Clemente Charter School also needs more space to better accommodate at least some of the students on its lengthy, perennial waiting list.

Mr. Iannelli's list of potential new sites for the Chamber included the Alvin H. Butz headquarters at Hamilton and Ninth Streets, which opened in September.

    ...
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., sat down for a brief interview with Iannelli a week ago before an appearance at Liberty High School in Bethlehem.
    ...
The Clinton campaign was probably persuaded by another aspect of the interview offer: Iannelli is not a trained journalist.Campaigns are increasingly in search of ways to communicate their platform without using the mainstream media.

Iannelli has not shied away from some tough questions when he has interviewed other national figures.
    ...
"I don't think it's going to go down in the annals of journalism as a hard interview," said Iannelli, who has been the Chamber's president for 10 years.

"It's unnerving to the community," said Tony Iannelli, president of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.
    ...
That does little to settle concerns by observers such as Iannelli.

"The Morning Call has been the mainstay for news.People rely on it," he said."Think about what we could be missing."

Lehigh professor Lule called the cutbacks "really short-term foolish."He said less news coverage is bad for the community and weakens newspapers' traditional role as government watchdog.
